Update: The Myspace Project

Holy Webcam Girls Batman!

That phrase alone can probably describe any male myspace experience. My profile is the bear minimum in details. When given pages upon pages to describe myself I chose to just direct people here. My Occupation: Paranoid Unemployed Dungeon Master. My hobbies: Reading, Blogging, Gaming. My Groups: Geeks. That is it. The complete lazy man attempt.

This minimal amount of effort has garnered one unsolicited proposition by email (that I foolishly deleted before thinking how it would have been perfect as part of this update) and 2 friends requests from woman who get nekkid in front of their computer. One might think I'm being cynical in that their profiles have many revealing shots of their ample bosoms. They may just think this is the best way to make male friends. But then there are the bulletins they post to their blogs (that I receive as a "friend" of theirs. These bulletins direct their "friends" to come chat with em on special site. Let us look at (warning! Not safe for work! Do not click on these links at work. Really!)Stefy and Sexxi Bekki. I think the nekkid parts and the name of the web site "Streamate" (what a clever combination of streaming video and playmate. Gag) pretty much uphold my belief that these women aren't actually looking for friends.

So here is another bit of myspace weirdness. My cousin and I went to see Clerks II the other day. We walked in during the credits of the previous showing and were taken aback by what we saw. After the credits were over and the view askew logo animated logo did its thing a list of all the people who had used the myspace "friends" button with the myspace clerks II profile. I looked at the website today. There are 43890 people who are friends with a marketing device. While I certainly can understand how their might be a community of like minded people who would be fans of the movie, I just cannot see myself saying yes this piece of advertisement that is probably run by some flunky and may have crossed the attention of the stars of the show perhaps once, is my friend. No. This crosses a boundary.

In summary: Minimal effort attracts webcam trolls. Marketing people are drooling over the myspace possibilities. Phase II of the myspace project may require help. I need to fill in all those little spaces. I'm also thinking it is time to break out the digital video recorder and make some odd shorts to further pollute the myspace either.

I wonder if my understanding of Myspace is similar to my parents' understanding of the internet in general...I just don't get it. What does it do, exactly?

Now, when it comes to meeting significant others (of any degree) online, you get out of it just as much as you put into it...if that's your intent, I suggest you beef up that profile a bit and start leaving comments on other people's profiles...or whatever it is that you crazy Myspacers do over there. :) (This advice from someone married to a guy she met online...er, or, at a restaurant as the official story goes.)
