Spcammer

Joe Cool was online last night just as I was finishing up and preparing for sleep. I had to share with him the latest email that I received from a purported member of webdate, which I will share with y'all in a bit. Anyway Joe cool read the email and sends me a Yahoo Instant Message: I hate spcammers. At first I thought he had made a typo but then I realized that the internet lingo has changed once more when I wasn't looking. They have combined the words spammer and scammer in one all purpose term. Spcammers are the (explicative deleted) who send out mass emails, not trying to sell you something, but rather fishing for an idiot who will give them something for nothing. These are the Nigerian bank fraud guys. These are the lonely Russian women. These are the fake bank password verification notices.

This morning I woke up to find yet another email from a woman whose credibility is much in doubt. I've seen the same single picture on many of the online dating services. I've often received yahoo "Icebreakers" (pre made 1 line messages you can send to people letting them know that while you are interested in them you are not willing to pay for the dating service) from someone claiming to be this same woman. What makes me suspicious is that she has had many accounts with different handles (like uklamok or shy or joe cool) and ages but always just the one picture. Probably some dude trying to scam Chicago area men. While I suppose there is a possibility that this is some one who is genuinely interested in me, my instincts are screaming scam artist. I think I'm just going ignore this email and relegate it to my trash bin.

Now let's hear from a lonely Russian woman:

Hello! I see your profile. My name is Olga.
I write you this letter because I would like
to meet someone especial, special to share
with him my life. I could present him all the
not spent love. I shall make his happiest on
the Earth if our feelings will be mutual. I
do not know, when this fine moment will come,
but I expect to find out you. Anybody never
knows, that can conduct to the big and serious
things. I would like to share with you, that I
search in relations. What you think? What your
ideas on it? If you want to meet the person
ho will be respectful to your position of life
and the purposes and will help you to create
attitudes relations of family, please write
to me, I expect letters and photos from you.
Sincerely Olga.

P.S. If you want to write to the lovely
green-eyed girl

I deleted the email address in the post script though it would be kind of funny for the spcammer to get some junk mail from people who read this post. I left all the typos and grammatical irregularities in place. What I want to know is who falls for this crap ?

Oh my,Rich! I do understand now why it would not be fun for your mom to be a reader at the blog. The letter from Olga was inspiring though. I mean, she spells really well for someone with such a poor grasp of English, don't you think? Unfortunate that one of her few spelling errors turned out to be "ho" , eh?
I really love your writing, so I've put you in my 'blogs that I read column' so I can check this blog frequently. I noticed you have 2 other contributors. Does everyone post often?

Who falls for this crap? Unfortunately, lots-o-people, which is why it's so prolific.

Oh well...

Glad that you're too smart for Olga's ho-ish green eyed charms.

KC - The Shy is a regular contributer. Right now though she is a bit busy doing important education related stuff. Joe Cool shows up from time to time reads about a month worth of posts in a sitting comments and disappears. I think he has been avoiding the election season posts as we both supported different candidates.

Diva - I think it would be funny for some would be mail order bride to run a credit history on me and realize that they are probably much more solvent than I am.

Hmm. Who is doing a search for my full name? I use Rich instead of the full name so this site doesn't show up for people doing a search. Your site shows up as a search result as Carmi used my full frst name in a comment right after my rich rosenthal II blogger profile tag.

The cyber stalker is busted and should comment now.

As long as there's a tiny percentage of people out there who will respond to this crap, the spcammers and others of their ilk will continue to pollute the works and anger/inconvenience/endanger the rest of us.

It only takes one person to ruin it for the rest of us. Time to replace the Internet with something more secure.
