Not Just Another Crazy Cat Story
So I'm watching the news the other night and I see this story about a man who has an incredible number of cats living under terrible conditions. I am moved. I'm a cat owner. A day doesn't go by where I don't pick one up and it makes my life just a little bit better by simply purring and allowing my to pet it. I hate to think of cats living and dying in filth and I wonder what will happen to the ones that survive the rescue.
Then this morning I pick up a copy of the of the Daily Southtown and find this story. Not only has the man been arrested and charges with two misdemeanors, but his home has been condemned. All at once everything he loves and owns is gone.
I understand the house has to go. The cats have had free reign for far to long and the house is a health risk and a blight on the neighborhood.
I don't understand the arrest. The man is obviously sick. He needs treatment. Now he faces fines, court fees and possible jail time. Yes he's done a terrible thing, but I doubt there was ever any malice involved. If someone where to deliberately take all those animals to torture or kill them then I'd be more than happy to throw em in jail and call em a felon. This is a tragedy.
The tragedy is compounded in that no one stopped it from happening. The neighbors claimed they made calls in the past to no avail. That is like saying I saw the men walk into the school with the guns and I tried to call 911, but the line was busy. They can claim they tried. They can feel justified.
They sat there and watched this man destroy his life and mistreat these cats. There biggest concern was that the place smelled bad, that some of the cats wandered away from the house and dared to cross their property boundaries.
This man has no home. He is most likely going to be financially ruined. The cats that were the center of his world have been taken away from him.
I'm sure the humane society got calls from people pledging to help the animals or willing to take some in.
I wonder if any of this man's neighbors are going to put together any kind of fund raiser to help this man get his life together.

I agree. That man does need serious help. I think it was a correct action on their part, however, that they took the cats and condemned the house. Sometimes, with animal hoarders, this type of shock is what they need to start on a road to recovery. They can finally come to terms that they are mentally ill and need to seek help. Some do, some don't. But, I like to focus on the "some do".
What a complete and total tragedy, for both the man and the cats. :-(
