Who Moved My Cheese

For fear of my own sanity, I delayed listening to the other two self help tapes, Who Moved My Cheese, and Dr. Phil’s Self Matters.

Who Moved My Cheese is based upon a short story about some lab rats and “little people”. The little people were just that—little people who were part of the same experiment that the mice were. The little people, rational and thinking, were faced with a problem when the cheese was moved from its usual spot in the maze. The rats, who were faced with the same problem, simply searched out the maze for more cheese. The little people felt that they had worked hard and deserved their cheese and instead of moving on, looking for more cheese, stayed in one spot. One little person, starving and tired of sitting around, decides to ask him self the question “what would I do if I were not afraid”. Then, he goes out and does what he would have done if he were not afraid and finds more cheese. This should be the end of the story, totaling 10 minutes of audio pleasure/hell.
I
nstead, the author decides that it is necessary to make a complete explanation of the story and how we can apply this story to our own lives. And how does he do this? Why he creates a story about 6 high school friends who come together for a reunion. During the first 10 minutes, he set up the scenario and one friend “tells” everyone the story about the rats and little people. After the story., each of the very diverse six friends explains to one another what they think the story means and how they will use it to better their lives. This Worries me.

Why does this worry me? This worries me because if the person listening to the tape needs the (by the way, awful scenarios) situations to take anything away from the story, they are already too far-gone for self help.

The overall concept of “what would I do if I were not afraid” isn’t all that bad. Often we are faced with situations which are new and it would be, more often than not, easier to stay where we are even though the alternative would bring us to a better outcome. I would have to say that this audio tape was less problematic than Dr. Dave’s Get ANYTHING you want

So what would you do if you were not afraid? Me? i'd go and stand amongst a large group of chickens.

More realistically: would not one group of tiny humans accuse another group of taking the cheese and start a war to take back the holy cheese. Give me cheese or give me liberty!
