Saved By The Children

So anyway I went for the walk the other day. This is not unusual. It is warm out and I need the exercise and you couldn't pay me enough to try and use my mother's old Richard Simmons work out tape. (OK that's a lie. You could probably pay me enough. I don't mind looking like an idiot as long as their is some cash involved). The unusual thing is that I've changed my route.

I decided to go north instead of south as it affords me the opportunity, if I so desire, to stop in a book store half way through the walk. I could waste most of a day in a book store. I thought this route was safer for me, not in the sense that I'm protecting myself from physical danger, but from the temptation of eating fast food. Sure they have cookies and coffee in the book store, but it was way to expensive for me to waste my hard mooched dollars on. It's not like the 49 cent cookie at dunkin donuts along the greats Southern exercise route.

Little did I realize when I made the decision to take this route that it would put me in Dire Wendy's jeopardy. Yes I passed a Wendy's going in the other direction, but it was on the opposite side of a very busy street. That was enough to dissuade me from going inside. But on the northern route I walk right in front of the place, passing both entrances.

Now here's the thing. Back in the day we never went to wendy's. The only one in the old neighborhood was in an out of the way place and there were many other places near by where one might get assorted grease. The only reason we ever went to wendy's was to get a Frosty. Those seemingly giant cups (I'm talking 1980's big not like now when a large shake in any place is a terrifying 32 oz) of chocolate were so much better than a shake at McDonalds or Burger King. It was thicker. The cups were larger. They seemed to have even more chocolate flavor. They were our absolute favorite treat (outside of Gerties Ice cream of course).

So back to the present. I wasn't just passing a grease shop. I was passing by a fond childhood memory. I was passing by a bit of nostalgia. This was more than temptation. It was overpowering temptation.

I'm not quite sure how I made it past the first set of doors. Maybe it was just inertia. I was moving and my body didn't want to stop. So then I passed the main window and what did I see: A woman with 5 children in to standing at the counter. I just kept walking.

There is no way I'm getting in that line. It is bad enough when you get behind two adults who have to keep a number of children in line, but when you get a parent alone with a group of children in a fast food restaurant it is a thing of nightmares.

"She's pushing me"

"I want the space toy! The SPACE TOY!"

"Jennie, what are you going to eat honey. No we aren't going to subway. Pick something off the menu. There has to be something you like. Just pick something off the menu."

"Mommy! Mommy! Mommy! I gotta Pee! Mommy!"

"Is that everything? No its not everything let me talk to your manager!"

So in the end I was saved from the temptation of eating a frosty by just the idea of out of control children. Thanks you little bastards.
